Life Legacy
Richard Francis Lamb, 85, of Joshuatown Road, Lyme and formerly of Westerly, passed away on Wednesday evening, September 14, 2011 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London. He is survived by his daughter, Laurie J. Lamb (Colburn Graves) of North Stonington, his daughter, Sheryl L. Caswell (Fred Robbins) of Pawcatuck, his daughter, Karen L. Underhill (William E. Underhill, Jr.) of Pawcatuck, his grandson Zachary R. Lamb (Nikki Carboni-Lamb), his grandson William E. Underhill, III, his grandson Daniel R. Caswell (Mariana Graves), his grandson Bryan J. Caswell and his grandson Christopher J. Caswell, his great-granddaughters, Alyssa, Ella, Avery and Brynn Lamb, his great-grandson, Lincoln Caswell and many nieces and nephews and his former wife, Shirley Rook Miller of Westerly and his longtime companion, Dorothy Czikowsky of Lyme. He was pre-deceased by his brothers, Reginald T., Charles M. and William P. Lamb.
Richard was born in Westerly on February 16, 1926 the son of the late Charles M. and Edith (Thompson) Lamb. He graduated from Westerly High School in 1944 and immediately entered World War II, joining the United States Navy. He served on submarine chaser SC-749 and the minesweeper YMS-269 in the Philippines. After the war, Richard earned his B.A. in Economics at the University of Rhode Island. He became a teacher and during the summer season was the proprietor of Lamb’s General Store in Weekapaug, following in his father’s footsteps. This popular spot included a post office and was a hub of activity. He enjoyed gardening, music, classic cars and recalling old times.
A graveside service and burial with full military honors will be held on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 11:00 am at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly. Funeral services are under the direction of Rushlow-Iacoi Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 64 Friendship Street, Westerly.
