Pauline G. (Sargent) Bence, 96, of West Street, Westerly, passed away on Friday morning, September 8, 2017 at her home. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Vincent W. Bence and her son, Thomas Bence. She is survived by her sons, Robert Bence of Ledyard, CT and James Bence of Bar Harbor, ME, her daughters, Cynthia A. Gaccione of Westerly and Jean M. Seeger of Davidsonville, MD, eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Bence was born in Greenfield, MA on September 17, 1920, the daughter of the late Henry and Mildred (Frasier) Sargent. She served in the United States Army as a registered nurse during World War II as a second lieutenant on the hospital ship S.S. Louis A. Milne where she met her husband, Vincent Bence, a captain in the United States Army.
She was the school nurse at Ledyard High School from 1963-1970. She worked as a nurse for many years until her retirement in Franklin, Maine. After retiring she could always be found in her gardens nurturing flowers, vegetables and her many grandchildren.
A Memorial Gathering will take place on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 11:00 am at Rushlow-Iacoi Funeral Home & Crematory, 64 Friendship Street, Westerly. There are no calling hours. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the American Red Cross Hurricane relief.
