Annunziata “Nancy” (Gaccione) Scaglione, 93, beloved wife for 65 years of Pietro Scaglione of Boiling Springs Avenue, Westerly, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Monday morning, October 11, 2021.
Annunziata was born in Acri in Calabria, Italy on January 16, 1928, the daughter of the late Luigi Gaccione and Aurelia Palermo. In 1972 Nancy, her husband and their two daughters moved from Italy to the United States. They settled in Westerly, Rhode Island, in the same neighborhood as her three siblings.
Cherished by her husband and family, she leaves behind her daughters Maria Scaglione and her partner Russell Norton of New Haven, CT and Gina Rowe and husband Guenther Englisch, of Mahopac, NY, her sister, Teresa Gaccione and her husband Angelo Fusaro of Acri, Italy and sister in law, Clorinda Gaccione of Westerly, as well as her three grandchildren, Dora Szekely and husband Michael Tansey, Sean Rowe and Danielle Rowe and many nieces and nephews.
She was an extraordinarily hard worker who contributed to the welfare of her family by working at Guild Guitars and later McDonald’s as a cook. She relished her role as nonna, particularly in her participation in the care of her granddaughter, Dora. Her gentleness and kind demeanor was the underlayment of all her interactions with her family and friends. Her greatest joys came from being surrounded by family, particularly her grandchildren, enjoying her excellent cooking and baking. Her exceptional gardening and cooking skills were enjoyed by all who visited and received gifts of homemade pasta, fresh vegetables and herbs and homemade Soppressata (Soupy). Canning her many beautiful tomatoes became an annual family event joyfully directed by her.
She was a devout catholic and parishioner of St. Pius X Church of Westerly.
Annunziata was a strong, generous woman with a big heart and she adored her family above all. She will be greatly missed.
