Daniel P. Smith, 30, long time resident of Westerly, went home to be with our heavenly father on Tuesday evening, December 14, 2021 at the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital of New London. Dan was born in Westerly on October 9, 1991, the beloved son of John E. and Kathleen M. (Saunders) Smith.
Dan was a doting and loving father to his three beautiful children, Gracie Lynn "Gracie girl", Melina May "Millie" and Ryder Charles "Bubby". From the time Dan could walk he was on his dirt bike being a daredevil. He raced motocross all over New England, proudly winning many races. He was a passionate fisherman, spending many evenings with his dad down at the jetty casting a line for the perfect catch. He was a talented self-taught mechanic who enjoyed working on cars, often helping family and friends. One of Dan's favorite hobbies was building and working on his drones. As a true example of his amazing soul, Dan was an animal lover, rescuing any animal he came across. Dan was a skilled construction worker proudly working beside his dad at the family business - J. Smith & Sons Construction of Westerly.
In addition to his three children, he is survived by his wife Shelby L. Smith of Westerly: his parents, John E. and Kathleen M. (Saunders) Smith of Westerly, his brother Charles Smith of Westerly, his sister Dorothy Smith of Westerly, his sister Kathleen and her husband Timothy Brown of Columbia, CT, his niece and nephew Aubree and Maxwell Smith of Westerly. Dan also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, and a countless number of friends.
The family would especially like to thank his childhood best friends Dustin Johnson and Kyle Oliver who were his guardian angels on earth.
Dan was welcomed into heaven with loving arms by his grandparents Jeannine and Frederick Smith, Dorothy and Albert Saunders, and Uncles Clifford Saunders and Stephen Smith.
A private service will be held with a celebration of life planned for a later date. Funeral services are under the direction of Rushlow-Iacoi Funeral Home & Crematory, 64 Friendship Street, Westerly.
