Raymond Lopes Obituary

Raymond P. Lopes, 91, of South Broad Street, Pawcatuck, passed away on Tuesday morning, December 6, 2022 at the Westerly Hospital. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 54 years, Eleanor R. (Montalto) Lopes in 2010 and his second wife of 6 years Kathryn (Rappe) Lopes in 2019. He is survived by his brothers John Lopes of San Antonio, TX, and Richard Lopes of Lancaster, WI, his nephew, David E. Simonelli of Wilmington, NC, his niece, Gayla Jackson of Boston, MA, his nephews Chris and Steven Montalto of Westerly, his stepson Dave Rappe of Jacksonville, FL and stepdaughters Clare Murphy of Jacksonville FL, Susan Dietz of Fallston MD, and Jo Ann Harmon of Glen Rock PA. He is also survived by many Lopes, Schenberger, and Burridge family nieces and nephews. Raymond’s many nieces and nephews will miss him dearly.

Mr. Lopes was born on May 24, 1931, in South Dartmouth, MA, the son of the late Antone and Caroline Lopes. The Lopes family moved to Mystic, CT in 1943. Ray graduated from Stonington High in 1949 and enlisted in the military in 1950. He was a member of the United States Navy, serving during the Korean War. Raymond started his career at Electric Boat in Groton in 1956 advancing to Chief Test Engineer and sailed on many of EB’s submarines during their sea trials. Raymond was recognized by several submarine skippers for his outstanding performance in grooming, training, and testing the vessel crews. After completing the USS Providence in 1986 Raymond retired after more than 30 years at Electric Boat. Ray was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling. He was a member of the Mystic Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society of Stonington.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 12, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. Michael Church, 60 Liberty Street, Pawcatuck. There will be no procession from the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will be held at St. Sebastian Cemetery, Pawcatuck. Calling hours will take place on the morning of the Mass from 9:00 am to 10:30 am at Rushlow-Iacoi Funeral Home & Crematory, 64 Friendship Street, Westerly.
