Ronald J. Gwaltney passed away on June 13, 2025 at the Westerly Hospital. Ron was born November 6, 1954, in Memphis, TN to Charles J. Gwaltney and Lydia (Picard.) His family came to Westerly when he was a youth and he attended Westerly High School. He excelled in football and track. Ron served on the Westerly Police Department for 25 years, retiring in 2003 at the rank of Detective Sergeant. During his years as a police officer, he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement from Salve Regina University. Ron had numerous achievements and accolades throughout his career in law enforcement.
Ron is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joann M. (Terranova) Gwaltney and his children; son Justin Gwaltney and his wife Gillian of Hopkinton, RI, daughter Erin Gwaltney of Bradford, RI and son Wesley Gwaltney and his wife Amanda of Groton, CT. He also leaves behind his three grandchildren, Carys, Alec and Keaton Gwaltney who affectionately referred to him as “Poppy.” He is survived by his brothers Charles “Jack” Gwaltney and wife Marilyn, and Lawrence “Larry” Gwaltney and wife Margaret all of Westerly. He was predeceased by his brother Roger Gwaltney.
Ron played many sports throughout the community. He was a coach and mentor through the PAL Organization as well as youth and high school sports. He loved to golf and was an accomplished boxer at both the amateur and professional level. He enjoyed traveling to New Hampshire to ski with his children and nephews, and more recently was able to watch his
grandchildren on the slopes.
Ron will be sadly missed by our family and the many people whose lives he touched. Burial will be private at the request of our family. There will be a celebration of Ron’s life on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at 6:00 pm at the Westerly Yacht Club, 1 Watch Hill Road, Westerly, RI 02891.
