Robert D. Karash, 78, of Pawcatuck, CT passed away peacefully with his family by his side on August 13, 2018 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, CT after a short battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband to Nina (Berube) Karash for fifty-one years.
Born in Hartford, CT, he was raised on a farm by foster parents and siblings. He never spoke much about his past as he was always eager to make new memories with his own family.
In addition to his wife, he will be dearly missed by his son Robert G. Karash of Occum, CT and daughter Nina (Karash) McCarthy of Westerly, RI, two grandsons, Robert J. Karash and Noah Sherman, a brother, Philip Gunther and sister-in-law Roberta, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his foster brother Ronald Brault and foster sister Jerri Bramley.
Known as “Red” he was a retired Auto Body Technician and Commercial Fisherman. Red worked for Westerly Auto Body in Westerly, RI for many years before moving to Vermont in 1984, where he then worked for his long time friend, Doug Smith, at Doug’s Auto Body in Gill, MA. He spent many years living in Vermont where he built a home for his family and enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, gardening, his much loved black Lab Nikki, and making his own maple syrup. When living in Rhode Island and then Connecticut, Red enjoyed fishing off his boat, scalloping, lobstering, and most of all spending time on the beach with his family. Red was well known for his one-liners and great sense of humor. If he liked you, you would earn a nickname and get teased by him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Cancer Society, 825 Brook St, Rocky Hill, CT 06067
