Marlene Lajoie Donahue, 83, of Ledyard, CT, went home to meet her Lord on August 20, 2021. Marlene was born in Van Buren, Maine, the daughter of the late Emile and Alice Lajoie. She is survived by her husband Leo and her sisters, Myrna Kiess of Wilmette, IL, Priscilla Fortin of Newington, CT, Lorraine Theriault of Van Buren, Me, Jacinthe Courci of Meza, AR, and a brother Rudy Lajoie of Degele, Qc, Canada. Marlene also had several nieces and nephews: Lynn Fortin, Doreen Klett, Jennifer Reiner, Nadia Courci Starr, Daniel Lajoie and Marise Lajoie.
She was educated at St. John’s University and received a B.B.A. She studied at Manhattan College, NY and Catholic University of America in Washington, DC where she received an M.A. in Theology. Finally at Central CT State University and Connecticut College she was awarded an M.B.E.
Marlene enjoyed teaching for twenty-six years, five of which were spent at St. Agatha H.S. in Maine, and twenty-one years at Ledyard High School in Ledyard, CT. After her teaching career she worked at A & T in North Stonington and Twenty Third Publications in Mystic, CT. Marlene had previously been a religious of the Daughters of Wisdom Community for twelve years.
Marlene was a faithful communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Pawcatuck, CT where she served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Eucharist and enjoyed singing in the choir.
Her hobbies included reading, which she and her mother would do together, cooking, entertaining family and friends, and playing with her precious great niece Sydney and her great nephews Dominique and Landon. She also loved floating in Long Pond with her purple “bubble”.
Marlene volunteered at St. Edmund’s Retreat House on Enders Island, CT and the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. She enjoyed time visiting residents at Mary Elizabeth Nursing Home and other nursing homes in the area. Her greatest attributes were her capacity to love and care for others.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Church on October 9th at 11:00 a.m. by her cousin the Rev. Roland Lajoie, SM from St. Paul, MN. Burial will take place at St. Michael Cemetery, Pawcatuck. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center, 27 Chase Street, Pawcatuck, CT 06379.
